About the Settlement Services Team
Our YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin Settlement Services team is small, but we’re open every day to welcome newcomers to our great community and help them adjust to life in Canada.
Settlement Services Manager

Juliane joined Settlement Services in September 2014. She holds a graduate degree in public and international affairs and has a working background with the Canadian federal government and an asylum-seeker and refugee service provider in South Africa. She is originally from Germany and passionate about assisting newcomers to settle in Canada.

Luisa Corrales joined the Settlement Services team in April 2017. She was born in Colombia and has been living in Canada since 2003. Luisa holds a degree in Equity Studies and Political Science, as well as a diploma in Social Service work. She has working experience with newcomers in the London area and is passionate about supporting and empowering newcomers to excel in their communities.

Irena Sompaseuth joined the Settlement Services team in March 2015 after several years of working in the cruise industry around the world. She holds a degree in Modern Languages, and speaks Spanish, Italian, Macedonian and Serbo-Croatian. As a newcomer herself, Irena understands the challenges and barriers newcomers face when they move to a new country, and is passionate about helping them achieve their goals.
English Language Instructors
Avril has been in the field of education for more than thirty years, both as a teacher and school principal. During her career, she taught French as a Second Language, as well as English in the FESPA program. She is now enjoying teaching students in the LINC program, having started in January, 2018.
Rafaela Lopez Cobar
Rafaela has been an English language instructor with the LINC program of the YWCA since 2018. She currently teaches the daytime class in St. Thomas. The focus of the class is on helping learners to improve their English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and to gain confidence using the English language in a wide variety of everyday life situations.
Julia has been an English instructor in the LINC program of the YWCA since 2015. She enjoys helping learners to improve their English language skills and to increase their confidence in participating in the wider community.
