About the Settlement Services Team
Our YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin Settlement Services team is small, but we’re open every day to welcome newcomers to our great community and help them adjust to life in Canada.
Settlement Services Manager

Juliane joined Settlement Services in September 2014. She holds a graduate degree in public and international affairs and has a working background with the Canadian federal government and an asylum-seeker and refugee service provider in South Africa. She is originally from Germany and passionate about assisting newcomers to settle in Canada.

Luisa joined the Settlement Services team in April 2017. She was born in Colombia and has been living in Canada since 2003. Luisa holds a degree in Equity Studies and Political Science, as well as a diploma in Social Service work. She has working experience with newcomers in the London area and is passionate about supporting and empowering newcomers to excel in their communities.

Kara joined the Settlement Services team in October 2018. She holds a degree in International Development and Globalization, and a graduate degree in Sociocultural Anthropology. Carrying out her fieldwork in southern Kenya, her thesis focuses on Maasai men and women’s perceptions and organization of cultural tourism activities in areas bordering the famous Masai Mara National Reserve. Before starting her graduate degree, Kara worked with local non-profits and during this time, enjoyed volunteering with the LINC class in Aylmer. In her current role as a Settlement Worker, Kara is motivated by a goal to welcome, connect, and empower newcomers as new members of the St. Thomas-Elgin community.
English Language Instructors
Rafaela Lopez Cobar
Rafaela has been an English language instructor with the LINC program of the YWCA since 2018. She currently teaches the daytime class in St. Thomas and the evening class in Aylmer. The focus of the class is on helping learners to improve their English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and to gain confidence using the English language in a wide variety of everyday life situations.
Stefanie has been an English language instructor with the LINC program of the YWCA since 2018 and currently teaches the class in Mount Salem. She is also an Adult Education Assistant with the YWCA Literacy and Basic Skills programs in Aylmer and St. Thomas as of January 2019. Stefanie holds a degree in Social Science with a concentration in Intercultural Studies. She has working experience with newcomers in the Aylmer area and also has experience teaching English as a Foreign Language overseas in Cambodia. She is passionate about seeing adult learners expand their horizons and skill set through education.
