Uplift

Would you like to further your career while enhancing your resume?

YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin is now accepting applications to participate in Lean Six Sigma training in partnership with Mohawk College AND Programming Essentials in partnership with Fanshawe College. Sponsored by the Canadian Federal Economic Development Agency.

How it Works

  1. Participants are enrolled in tailored certification programs at accredited Ontario universities, colleges, or training institutions.
  2. During training, participants gain job-related technical skills and develop professional soft skills and exit with recognized certification.
  3. During and after certification, YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin provides wrap-around services including activities such as mock interviews, resume-building, and networking activities. These supports will assist participants in finding jobs that match their new skill set.
  4. Training is delivered part-time and online.

Participants MUST:
• be a woman (cisgender or transgender) or non-binary
• have a bachelor’s degree, diploma, or relevant experience
• be a Canadian citizen or have permanent resident status
• be able to function at Canadian Language Benchmark levels 7-8 if English is not their first language
• may be unemployed or under-employed

Application Process:

  1. Request and complete an application form
  2. Applications will be reviewed and invitations for a virtual interview with the program coordinator will be extended to potential participants
  3. Participants then complete the necessary documentation required by both YWCA and Mohawk College

What is Lean Six Sigma?

Lean Six Sigma tools and business-improvement methodologies are optimizing the way companies do business in healthcare, manufacturing, finance, IT and many other industries. Green Belt certification at Mohawk College is the introductory level for Lean Six Sigma. Originally implemented in the manufacturing sector, these highly respected and proven business improvement methodologies are used by firms world-wide to improve processes and quality by reducing “non-value added” activities, process variations and waste to maximize efficiencies and customer satisfaction. Green Belt program participants will focus on a step-by-step process of improvement using statistical tools and Lean and Six Sigma project management strategies such as DMAIC and PDCA. Mohawk College, partnered with Continuous Improvement Consulting 360 (CI360), has developed an innovative way for professionals to achieve Yellow, Green and even Black Belt Certification in as little as 8 months.

Green Belt Theory

Introductory statistical concepts are coupled with Minitab/Excel instruction for data-driven decision making.

Green Belt Certification

Students submit a project report for evaluation which meets requirements to achieve Green Belt Certification.

Black Belt Theory

Advanced statistical concepts are coupled with Minitab/Excel instruction to facilitate data-driven decision making.

Black Belt Certification

Completion of a Black Belt level project is defined as an improvement initiative extending across the enterprise through multiple processes or departments.

Creating Web Pages with HTML

You will develop the skills needed to create, edit, and link documents as well as learn how to control the text layout using lists, line breaks and tables. You will also learn how to add graphics and multimedia to your web documents. “HTML is at the center of almost everything you see on the Internet. While it doesn’t look like much on its own, it forms the building blocks on top of which all the other pieces rest.”

JavaScript

While JavaScript is the language of instruction, this course covers the essential concepts of most modern programming languages, including sequence, selection, repetition, variables, arrays, and objects. “JavaScript can change the HTML of a website in real time after it has loaded. It can hide things, add new things, change what things look like, and more. Any time something on a website change while you are looking at it, there is a good chance that JavaScript is being used to do it.”

C# Programming Intro

C# is often used to develop professional, dynamic websites on the. NET platform. This language is object-oriented, it is often utilized to develop websites that are incredibly efficient, easily scalable, and easy to maintain. “What is C# used for? Like other general-purpose programming languages, C# can be used to create several different programs and applications: mobile apps, desktop apps, cloud-based services, websites, enterprise software and games. Lots and lots of games.”

Developing Web App with ASP.NET & C#

Building on fundamentals of C# programming this course introduces students to Web application development and database connectivity. “ASP.NET is a web application framework developed and marketed by Microsoft to allow programmers to build dynamic web sites. It allows you to use a full featured programming language such as C# or VB.NET to build web applications easily.”
