Janitorial & Maintenance Assistant

Position: 30 hours/week
Reports to:  Property Manager
Start date:  December 1, 2025

Position Summary – The Janitorial & Maintenance Assistant, under the direction of the Property Manager, supports the upkeep, cleanliness, and safety of all YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin buildings and properties. This role helps ensure facilities are well-maintained, organized, and welcoming for residents, staff, and visitors. The position assists with general maintenance, custodial tasks, and storage organization to promote a clean, safe, and functional environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily custodial duties, including cleaning common areas, offices, and restrooms
  • Maintain garbage and recycling schedules according to YWCA standards
  • Inspect buildings, grounds, and equipment regularly to identify maintenance or repair needs
  • Assist with minor repairs, maintenance projects, and renovations under supervision
  • Support yard work, landscaping, and seasonal outdoor maintenance
  • Maintain and organize storage areas, supplies, and inventory
  • Assist with setup and takedown for meetings and special events
  • Support room turnovers for residential programs
  • Follow all workplace safety procedures and comply with health and safety regulations
  • Maintain confidentiality of YWCA St. Thomas-Elgin information and records
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements

Education/Experience

  • Successful completion of secondary school or equivalent education preferred
  • Training or coursework in building maintenance, custodial services, or related fields considered an asset.
  • A willingness to learn, follow directions, and work as part of a team is essential
  • Experience in janitorial, custodial, or building maintenance is essential
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques, building maintenance, and use of tools/equipment
  • Ability to perform minor repairs and handle basic maintenance tasks
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Reliable, responsible, and attentive to detail

Additional Information / Working Conditions

  • Primarily daytime hours, Monday through Friday, 30 hours per week – hours may fluctuate based on facility needs (early morning, evening, or weekend work may be required on occasion)
  • Work performed at the main office and offsite program locations
  • Physical ability to lift up to 55 lbs and perform repetitive tasks
  • May require use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Work may occur indoors and outdoors, including some work at heights or on ladders
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check within the last six months
  • Completion of self-directed learning activities, including Health & Safety training
  • Valid driver’s license and insurance required
  • Professional interaction with staff, residents, clients, and members of the public
  • May involve interaction with at-risk populations
  • Occasional travel between sites may be required
