Canada Connects

Canada Connects is a community connection initiative that supports newcomer settlement by matching newcomers with Canadian citizens or long-time community members. Through shared activities and conversations, participants build meaningful relationships and strengthen community belonging.

Integration is a two-way process, and Canada Connects brings newcomers and community members together to help create welcoming, inclusive communities.

For Community Volunteers

By participating in Canada Connects, volunteers can:

  • Help foster newcomers’ sense of belonging
  • Build cross-cultural understanding and communication skills
  • Learn about newcomers’ experiences, strengths, and contributions

For Newcomers

Canada Connects helps newcomers:

  • Build connections and meaningful relationships within the community
  • Improve communication skills and understanding of life in Canada
  • Share their experiences and contributions while helping Canadians better understand settlement challenges

How to Participate

Participation is simple:

  1. Complete our Canada Connects intake form
  2. Indicate your interests, availability, and preferred type of connection
  3. Be matched with a newcomer based on shared interests

After You’re Matched

Once matched, newcomers and volunteers can participate in a variety of activities that support connection, learning, and community engagement.

Activities may include:

  • Sharing information about the local community, including transportation, schools, and community events
  • Preparing and sharing food together or participating in group potlucks
  • Attending cultural, recreational, or sporting events, such as festivals or local games
  • Engaging in informal conversations to practice and improve English language skills
  • Building social networks and connecting with others who share common interests

Activities are flexible and based on shared interests, goals, and availability.
